- Remove branches that cross each other, grow into the same space, or grow into the center of the canopy.
- Preserve low limbs and inner branching as much as possible.
- Cut to the branch collar (Outside the collar will leave a stub. Flush to the parent limb/trunk will make difficult would for the tree to close.)
- Re-leader:
- When reducing a limb, cut back to a branch at least 1/3 the size of the parent limb.
- Remove no more than 30% of a tree’s canopy.
